The Ecuador Tierra Viva (ETV) Foundation collaborates with the Book Bus Charity from the UK to promote literacy. We have operated a mobile library service in Zambia and Ecuador, bringing books and reading programs to communities with limited access to educational resources. In Ecuador, we have been honored to receive support from the UK Ambassador, Mrs. Linda Cross, and the Minister of Education, with whom we have signed a cooperation agreement.
Our beautifully designed bus, illustrated by renowned artist Quentin Blake, serves as a mobile library filled with books, art, and music materials.
Staffed by volunteers, the Book Bus has visited schools in towns and rural communities throughout Ecuador, fostering a love for reading through storytelling, interactive activities, and creative arts. Additionally, we have supported literacy programs for adults in local communities.
Previously, the Book Bus worked with schools across four regions in Ecuador, integrating with school schedules to enhance education rather than replace it. Our volunteers provided literacy support, creative arts workshops, and reading clubs for students and community members.
Although the Book Bus is not currently operating in Ecuador, we are actively working to restart the program and continue bringing books and learning opportunities to children.
We have primarily worked with small rural schools, where resources are often scarce. Despite limited funding, these schools are welcoming, well-run, and committed to providing education to their students. Our work in these communities has been incredibly rewarding, creating lasting connections and inspiring a love of reading.
The best part of our work is engaging with the children—bright, enthusiastic, and full of joy. Despite facing economic hardships, they constantly amaze us with their resilience, curiosity, and warmth. The Book Bus has always been a space filled with laughter, creativity, and discovery.
The Book Bus is not currently operating in Ecuador. However, we are committed to resuming this initiative as soon as possible.
We have historically relied on volunteers to support our mission. Travel to schools, project support, accommodation, and breakfast are provided. As a self-funding charity, we require a volunteer donation of US$150 per week to help cover costs. (Minimum volunteer period: 2 weeks). ETV inscription cost: US$50.
